HEALTH DEPT. TREATING CATCH BASINS TO COMBAT MOSQUITO BREEDING

Targeting Eastern & Western Wards of Pittsburgh with History of West Nile Activity .

Starting on Monday, July 19, the Allegheny County Health Department will treat storm water catch basins in selected areas with pesticides to combat the breeding of mosquitoes that can carry the West Nile virus.  While West Nile has not yet been detected in the County this year, it may only be a matter of time before the virus turns up here.  The current hot, humid weather with isolated showers creates the standing water and atmospheric conditions mosquitoes need for breeding. “Any catch basin that holds water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Treating such catch basins with pesticides can help keep mosquito larvae from emerging into full-fledged adults capable of spreading disease to humans,” said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.  The pesticides, which are non-toxic to people, pets and other aquatic life, are applied manually and will inhibit mosquito breeding in catch basins through September. Treated catch basins will be marked with a bright green chalk.   Health Department staff will focus on the eastern and western wards of Pittsburgh, which both have a history in previous years of West Nile activity.

The treatments will continue daily until all catch basins in these areas are treated and will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.  Treatments may be postponed when heavy rains are forecast.   Health officials say residents can also help reduce the mosquito population by eliminating and treating breeding sites on their own property.  Inexpensive but effective pesticides similar to what the Health Department uses are available at local hardware stores and home improvement centers.

FREE PARK-AND-RIDE LOT TO OPEN IN SOUTH FAYETTE

Free park-and-ride lot to open in South Fayette, Thursday, July 08, 2010, By Jon Schmitz, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Port Authority will open a new 125-space park-and-ride lot in South Fayette on Sept. 5.  The lot will be at the former Star City Cinemas at Hickory Grade and Millers Run roads. Parking will be free.

The lot will be served by a new 31 Bridgeville route (formerly 31D and 31E), which will run seven days a week between Downtown Pittsburgh and the park-and-ride, using Millers Run Road and current 31D routing, and the G31 Bridgeville Flyer (formerly 33D and 33E), which will operate weekdays only via Millers Run Road and Route 50 to Carothers Avenue, Main Street and Mansfield Avenue to the West Busway.

The new lot is the result of an agreement between Port Authority and South Fayette officials, including township commissioners and manager Mike Hoy. Authority CEO Steve Bland called it "a prime example of how organizations can work together to benefit the community. We are deeply appreciative of their cooperation and commitment to improving public transportation in Allegheny County."

HEALTH DEPT. SPONSORS APPLIANCE RECYCLING PROGRAM

Offers Free Curbside Pickup of Refrigerant-Containing Appliances

The Allegheny County Health Department is sponsoring a program that offers free pickup and recycling of refrigerant-containing appliances which are no longer in use and need to be discarded.   The program is available to County residents only and includes refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and other household appliances that contain refrigerants.  No commercial appliances will be accepted.   “Removing refrigerants from these appliances and recycling them is a win-win-win for the economy, the environment and public health,” said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon.  “Recycling such appliances not only cuts down on illegal dumping and saves valuable landfill space, but also prevents the release of refrigerant gases that deplete the ozone layer, which blocks the sun’s ultraviolet rays that increase the risk of skin cancer.”  The Appliance Warehouse and Parkway Heating and Air Conditioning are carrying out the program under contracts with the Health Department.

To arrange for curbside pickup of an appliance, residents countywide can call the Appliance Warehouse at 1-888-GO-FREON (1-888-463-7366) and those in the western suburbs are urged to call Parkway Heating and Air Conditioning at 412-279-6001.

The western suburbs include Bridgeville, Carnegie, Collier, Coraopolis, Crafton, Crescent, Findlay, Green Tree, Heidelberg, Ingram, Kennedy, McDonald, McKees Rocks, Moon, Neville, North Fayette, Oakdale, Pennsbury Village, Robinson, Rosslyn Farms, Scott, South Fayette, Stowe, and Thornburg.

Funded by a $150,000 grant from the County Clean Air Fund, the program aims to recycle at least 3,750 appliances this year.  Nearly 8,000 refrigerant-containing appliances were collected and recycled in three earlier programs sponsored by the Health

HEALTH DEPT. OFFERS COUNTY RESIDENTS FREE SMOKE ALARMS

Proven Life-Savers When They Work; Test Batteries When Turning Clocks Ahead.

The Allegheny County Health Department is reminding residents that smoke alarms are proven life-savers but only when they are in good working order.  Since nearly half of all smoke alarms don’t work, usually because of dead or missing batteries, health officials recommend testing smoke alarm batteries to make sure they work when turning clocks ahead to Daylight Saving Time on March 14.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in house fire by 50%, yet most residential fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or in homes with alarms too old to be reliable or which have missing, disconnected or dead batteries.

The Health Department has a free smoke alarm program to help residents who have no smoke alarms or ones more than 10 years old which may no longer be reliable. The program, funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, provides and installs a maximum of two battery-operated smoke alarms per home.

To schedule an installation, please call the Health Department at 412-247-7800.
